What you need to know if you’re a Malaysian student returning to college or university in 2021

Starting college or university or returning for a new semester usually means registering for subjects, checking your timetable and confirming your accommodation. However, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, you might have some questions about heading back to college or university.

On 31 December 2020, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) released a list of answers to frequently-asked-questions (FAQs) for students returning to higher education institutions. Here’s what you need to know:

1. All higher education institution (HEI) students will return to their campus in phases, according to their course of study. Teaching and learning sessions will be a combination of face-to-face and online sessions.
2. All Malaysian students studying at public universities, private higher education institutions, polytechnics and community colleges will be able to return to their campus from March 2021.
3. Students will need to pay for their own travelling expenses when returning to campus.
4. The respective higher education institutions will carry out the return of students to campus in phases as early as mid-February 2021.
5. All students will receive a notification from their institution informing them of when to travel to campus.
6. Students travelling from a red zone will need to travel at an earlier date in order to undergo a 10-day quarantine at a quarantine centre designated by their HEI.
7. The respective HEIs will bear the students’ accommodation cost at the quarantine centre.
8. Students who have symptoms, e.g., fever, upon arrival at campus will be referred to a clinic, hospital or health facility for a comprehensive health screening and if necessary, tested for Covid-19.
9. Students staying on and off-campus have a social responsibility of adopting new normal practices to prevent the spread of Covid-19 such as social distancing, washing hands frequently, avoiding handshakes, putting on a facemask, etc.
10. All students must use the MySejahtera application on and off campus to enable contact tracing by the Malaysia Ministry of Health.
